Here is a fun activity and a great way to get your class to tell you something about themselves.
What Is An Acrostic?
Acrostics are a fun poetic form that are easy to write.
An acrostic is a poem in which the first letters of each line spell out a word, phrase or sentence. The word, phrase or sentence can be whatever you like.
Usually, the first letter of each line is capitalized. This makes it easier to see the word spelled out vertically down the page.
Acrostics don’t need to rhyme, and you don’t need to worry about the rhythm of the lines. Each line can be as long or as short as you want it to be.
Acrostic Autobiographies
Tell the children they are going to use their acrostic poem to tell you a little about themselves. An autobiography is something someone writes about themself.
First, they need to write their name down the left side of a piece of paper in capital letters. This can be their first name only, or their full name. This could be done in a colour pen or pencil.
They can then have as many or as few words on each line as they want. Show them this example so that they can keep going back to it to remind them how it is set out.
If they get stuck for words, encourage them to open their dictionary at the key letter and go word hunting.
You can, of course have your name running down the middle of your poem, like this:
And, if you are feeling really adventurous try having the name written down as the last letter in each line.
